Season Five is totally unpredictable. Just when I think that Nancy has no more moves to make, she finds a way to wriggle out of each disastrous situation and actually come out ahead.

The character of Estaban has been a great addition to the cast. He keeps things exciting in the show by adding a much more dangerous element than merely selling drugs. Nancy finds herself between a rock and a really hard place. She is in danger of losing her home, her family, her sanity, and her life.

The most exciting season yet, must see t.v.

Showtime’s series Weeds is one of the best shows on television. Each season is consistently strong- with engaging, inventive stories, complex charecters and wonderful dark comedy. Mary-Louise Parker is absolutely phenomenal as Nancy Botwin, one of the most complex and uncompromising charecters to ever appear on television. Parker is backed by an always reliable supporting cast who bring humor and heart to the at times, very dark proceedings. Weeds’ Fifth Season is the slowest one but that does not mean it’s bad. It is the most character driven season, we get to see the true colors of these charecters and what they really want, and at times, its not pretty. Nancy continues her downward spiral and drags her youngest son Shane down with her. Silas becomes the emotional center of this extremely dysfunctional family, and at 18 has become the real father figure. Andy strives to get out of Nancy’s grasp and start his own life while Celia tries her hardest to be a different person and at times actually tries to BE Nancy. This season is all about coming to terms with the inevitable and face the consequences. There is plenty here to reward long time fans of the show and viewers interested in the psychological make-up of these crazy charecters. The season finale promises to set up more of the themes established in this season. I cant wait to see what happens next. Weeds is still my personal favorite show on TV, layered, funny, deep and always surprising.

When an Italian housewife Rosalba (Licia Maglietta) suddenly finds herself stranded, she realizes that perhaps she is not as appreciated by her family as she would like to be. All she sees is the tour bus moving off into the distance and then realizes her son has changed his phone number so she is unable to stop the bus.

When they finally call to ask where she is, she can’t believe they didn’t even check to see if she was on the bus before they left. Feeling adventurous and a little resentful, she decides to hitch a ride home, but ends up in Venice. With little money to spare, she manages to survive for a few days with hopes of getting a job and finding a place to stay.

After finding a job in a florist shop and moving in with a waiter named Fernando (who is just about to kill himself it seems), she meets Grazia who bursts into her life asking her to help her with a plumbing disaster.

For some reason Rosalba is swept away in this new life and keeps telling her family she will be back soon, yet something strange power seems to overtake her and she decides she too needs a vacation, albeit a working vacation. She spends her time working in the florist shop, reading books in the evening and eating breakfast prepared by Fernando. He also leaves her a note each morning, which is quite romantic even though, technically, she is just his house guest.

Once Rosalba’s husband starts to notice that things are not getting done around his house, he hires Costantino (Giuseppe Battiston) as his private detective. This is when it become more of a comedy of sorts as Costantino is really a plumber who is determined to find Rosalba and return her to her husband.

An enjoyable escape that really keeps

I found this movie to be absolutely charming and left the theatre with a smile on my face. Licia Maglietta was marvelous as the 40-something lovely lady who decides to take the other fork in the road and starts a new life in Venice. Tired of being under-appreciated and verbally abused by her boorish husband and preoccupied sons, Rosalba (Licia) decides to live for herself for a change and then becomes the catalyst that magically causes others to change around her — the suicidal landlord/restauranteer, the aging florest employer who is a former anarchist, the lady neighbor down and hall, and even the comical plumber/detective sent in pursuit by her husband.

This film is funny, poignant, heart-warming, and charming. The entire cast is truly memorable; the small vignettes of Rosalba’s dreams are somewhat jarring in their presentation - but once you become acclimated to their random arrival they add a bit of mystery to the film that is somewhat resolved at the end.

This is a DVD that I will buy upon release for sure.

I guess only time will tell if the U.S. will ever see the glory that several other countries currently can. According to Wikipedia on 2/09/08, “Due to music rights issues, the first complete season of Ally McBeal has not been made available on DVD in the United States (only 6 random episodes can be found on the R1 edition, Ally McBeal - Ally on Sex and the Single Life)”

I know this doesn’t really help matters, but at least there is a reason we haven’t seen it around yet.

I have been waiting since the show went off the air for the box set. It is SO RIDICULOUS that other shows that have been on the air a year or less are getting released on DVD, but this FABULOUS show with lots of loyal viewers is not available in the US. I am afraid to buy an import for fear that I’d waste $100-$200 and not be able to play it on my player. PLEASE RELEASE A US VERSION!! WE WILL BUY IT! Come on FOX, PARAMOUNT, whoever! Get on the ball…… the fans have been WAITING for years!!!!

I used to follow this show when I was in high school, and have since mourned the loss of the cable television with which to view the reruns. My craving for cynical humor having piqued, and there being few other outlets with which to quell this craving, I was compelled to buy the two available Daria DVD’s.

This DVD plays out like one long (just over an hour) episode. Is it Fall Yet? tells a story of summer hiatus from the mundane pit otherwise known as school. However, is the summer break really much of a break from prosaic servitude? Quinn is getting help from a tutor in hopes of raising her college entrance exam scores, Kevin and Brittney are attempting to survive as pool lifeguards, Jane is attending an artists colony that might not be all it’s cracked up to be, and Daria’s mother signs her up for a stint at the OK-to-Cry Corral as a counselor. Furthermore, Daria is attempting to make sense of her relationship with Tom, her best friend Jane’s ex-boyfriend (which is a conundrum in itself). However, all will wade through their various forays into humdrum subjugation and surface having learned valuable life-lessons.

In addition to the film, two bonus episodes are included. Fire! and Dye Dye My Darling both take place before the movie. In Fire!, Daria’s father accidentally sets fire to their home, causing the Morgendorfers to temporarily move into a hotel while repairs are made. This is where the sparks begin to fly between Daria and Jane with regards to Tom. In Dye Dye My Darling, Daria is forced to help Jane recognize the tiger within by streaking her hair. When the dye job is somewhat less-than-successful, Jane views it as Daria’s way of trying to break up Jane and Tom’s relationship.

The repartee between Daria and Jane, the sardonic humor the two exchange between one another, is absolutely smirk-inducing. I love the dialogue in this show. Though Quinn’s friends, in addition to Kevin and Brittney, can be horribly wretched to listen to at times, one cannot deny the fact that similar personas did exist in high school, and continue to persist in the world today, if not quite to the same extreme. Some episodes are of course better than others, but even after five years the show never got old, and I have yet to grow out of it.

Anyone who is familiar with, and can appreciate, the cast of characters and all of their idiosyncrasies will find this a welcome addition to their DVD collection. However, that does not mean that one needs to be acquainted with the series in order to appreciate the film. As far as I know, there is no word yet on forthcoming releases of the five seasons on DVD, so I suppose fans will have to appease themselves with the two released short films and their accompanying bonus episodes for now.

Before there was Daria/Is It College Yet? (2002), there was this DVD - Daria/Is It Fall Yet? (1997). This MTV movie follows Daria, Jane, Quinn, and the rest of the crew (with Up Chuck being noticeably absent) as they go their separate ways to muddle through their own versions of purgatory known as summer vacation. Be sure to check out Mr. DeMartino’ escape from the OK To Cry Corral (a la One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest). Also included are the bonus episodes “Fire!” and “Dye, Dye, My Darling” as well as Mystik Spiral’s “Freakin’ Friends” music video. Until someone steps up and puts out a Daria DVD boxed set (hint, hint!!!), this and the College DVD are as close as we’re going to get for now.

We bought this for our 4-year old daughter and she loves it. The movie is very well done and she wanted to watch it over and over again. She asked a lot of questions and I am really impressed how this movie helped with the explanation of the true meaning of Easter and what it still means to us this day.

We purchased this video to show the Easter Story to the children at our church. It was well done, connected modern day kids with ancient Biblical truths, and handled the crucifixion in an appropriate way for younger children. It kept the attention of the children, as well as the adults. A good resource to have at Easter.

Pay no mind to the countless comparisons to “Jaws”, “Alien”, and the rest of the monster classics that a quality film like this always draws. This one stands on its own as an original mix of harsh political commentary, family drama, black comedy, and horror. The metaphor for the hysteria over the asian SARS epidemic is thick and the accusatory tone towards America’s interventionist ways and the alarmist media’s sensationalism is thicker. But don’t think this is some heavy-handed self-serving political film that wallows in its own symbolism; this film is about the importance of family pulling together and taking care of each other when noone else will. Oh yes, and there’s a monster in there somewhere too.

I’m going to drop a few minor spoilers now so if you want to go in completely cold and experience the full thrill I received viewing this movie you might want to go watch the film now. Alright, on with the content review. Let me put it this way, I got my money’s worth in the first 20 minutes of the film. The sudden appearance of the beast breaks the most entrenched of monster movie standards: the slow reveal. The almost complete lack of buildup shocked me as the monster came charging out of the background in its high-velocity and unsettlingly awkward gait with ferocious momentum sending humanity flying left and right. What follows is one of the greatest rampage sequences ever seen by human eyes. I was absolutely thrilled by it and only the most jaded of film fans could feel otherwise. In fact, aside from a few gaping plot holes, my only real complaint about this movie is that it climaxes so soon. That’s not to say the rest of the film isn’t good, but it never reaches that fever pitch again.

As the trigger-happy government declares quarantine and almost immediately begins asserting it’s will on the victims -even as they still mourn their lost family members- the media spreads word of a deadly and highly contagious virus that the creature is carrying (hence, “the host”). But as the film progresses, we don’t see the evidence of any abnormal sickness, just the paranoia of the people in reaction to the media’s hysterics and government’s jumping to conclusions. As our protagonists, the Park family, search for their little girl (Hyun-seo, taken to the monster’s den for later consumption) we come to see that when the government is incompetent and overbearing and the general populace is collectively terrified of the guy standing next to them the only things you can rely on are your own family and what you can see and do for yourself.

The ne’er-do-well Park family consists of Hyun-seo’s father, a slow-witted narcoleptic, her aunt who’s a professional archer with a tendency to freeze under pressure, a college-educated alcoholic of an uncle with a hot temper who can’t find a job, and a caring grandfather who holds them all together. The dysfunction of the family is humorous to watch, but the devotion they all share in the search for their little girl is touching; and that’s the real heart and soul of this film. The monster is menacing, the government is corrupt, the Americans are comically over-the-top self-serving jerks, the populace at large are terrified for all the wrong reasons, and the real disease is the paranoia spread by the media but the Park family’s struggle is the real story here and it’s a great one.

Really, do not watch the dubbed version of this movie. If you’re watching that then you are not watching the same movie. I have a feeling that nearly all of the negative reviews are due to the atrocious dubbing this film received.

If you’re not willing to watch the subtitled version, then I suggest you avoid the film, because it will be an awful experience. I just watched a clip of it on YouTube and I was cringing!

The dubbing is an insult to the original cast and crew of this film. Please. Please. Please. Do not watch the dubbed version.

I am a big racing fan and so seeing footage of the Kentucky Derby with Citation winning, Whirlaway, Count Fleet, Swaps with Nashua, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer lose his only race - these were great to see and collect. But I do wish that more of the footage from the 1950’s and 1960’s would become available. I know that film was hard to protect over the years but isn’t there more out there?

This edition was divided into catagories that flowed very well. But I wouldn’t even need that really. And I would hope that there would also be a DVD on the Preakness and Belmont. A collection of the other big races that have a long,glorious tradition the ‘Handicap’ Triple Crown, The Triple Tiara for 3 year old fillies, Turf racing through the last 100 years or more.

Moonlight Press Video did a very good job and I hope they take on some of the other great Racing Moments

During a time of very few horse racing DVDs, this item is a real gem. It features wonderful footage of past and present Kentucky Derbies - Triple Crown champions, fan favorites, upsets, etc. Citation, Secretariat, Barbaro, Iron Leige — they are all here. The stories behind the races are brief and to-the-point; they don’t overshadow the action. If you love Thoroughbred horse racing, this DVD is for you.

“Rascal,” the Disney/Buena Vista live-action film based on the 1963 million-plus, best-selling “memoir of a better era” by Wisconsin-born author Sterling North, is finally available on video and DVD — and, although the wait has been far too long, the film stands up to the test of time. Bill Mumy is charming as Sterling as a child, but the animals steal this show. Masterfully directed by the same gent who created the best of Disney’s nature flicks, this warm-hearted, nostalgic view of 1918-era southern Wisconsin (the fictional setting of Brailsford Junction is based on the author’s hometown of Edgerton, Wisconsin, located in Rock County, nearby a meandering Rock River and one of the largest lakes in the state, Koshkonong) will please adults and children alike. Having the film widely available again, 33 years after its first theatrical release, is almost worth the shortcomings of the DVD (and those all involve the decision not to include any extras — no theatrical trailers, no biographical info on the talented cast, no info on Sterling North [1906-1974, also the author of "So Dear to My Heart," made into another film by Disney in 1949], no info on the Sterling North Society of Edgerton and its restoration of Sterling’s childhood home as a museum, etc. etc.), all of which would have added immeasurably to the movie’s enjoyment. Nevertheless, a first-rate effort by a talented team and a film made during the golden age of Disneyeseque films about boys and their pets.

“Rascal” is the true story of a baby raccoon which author Sterling North found when he was 11 years old, and raised until it was time to set the raccoon back in the wild.

This is a sweet story, and the bits which may cause some parents concern in the book itself are not even present in the movie, making it sweeter still.

There are spoken threats to the raccoon (neighbors warn that if the raccoon starts to raid gardens, he will be shot), but it never goes beyond that.

That said, there are scenes where Sterling’s father has a dead turkey slung over his shoulder, and another where the plucked turkey is ready to become dinner.

Also, in one scene Sterling’s father invites the town’s new minister and Sterling’s teacher in to dinner, and proceeds to get them drunk on hard cider.

One other matter which may cause concern for some - although it is based on reality - is that Sterling’s mother has passed away, and, to compound matters, his father is a travelling entrepreneur, and he often leaves young Sterling at home alone for days on end (it is made clear in the movie that this is not ok, although Sterling’s father doesn’t seem to see it that way at first).

Finally, there is a scene in the beginning - and one in the end - where the raccoons tangle with a bobcat. Nobody gets particularly hurt, but it might be a bit scary for a few moments for younger children.

If the above are ok for your family, then “Rascal” is a very sweet film, and we will be watching it again.

And, oh yes, the fellow who plays Sterling is none other than Bill Mumy - yes, that Bill Mumy, who played Will Robinson in “Lost in Space”.

Own these films individually on DVD from Image Entertainment. Nice to have them in boxed sets like this though I must let Metzger fans know that the transfers from First Run are not as good as the Image versions. Where the Image versions are color saturated and sharp, the First Run transfers have murky, faded out color and soft pictures.
